Key differences between ATEX certification and IECEx certification

In recent years, the annual growth rate of the global demand for explosion-proof electrical products has reached 17%. Only a small number of explosion-proof electrical products in China are sold in the international market. Qingdao Hengfengshuai Electric MARTIN believes that the implementation of explosion-proof electrical products certification system in line with international standards will help improve the technical content and quality of products, promote industrial upgrading, expand the export trade of explosion-proof electrical products. Therefore, Qingdao Hengfengshuai Electric applied for IECEx certificate of electric products such as power distribution transformer, switch cabinet and distribution box as early as 2018, which is in line with international standards.

At present, the world's more well-known explosion-proof certification bodies are mainly ATEX and IECEx. Today, let Hengfengshuai Electric Technical Director introduce the difference between the two:
IECEx certification
IECEx (English IEC Scheme for Certification to Standards for Electrical Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres, International Electrotechnical Commission explosion-proof electrical product certification system for short), refers to the certification of electrical equipment specially used in petroleum, chemical industry, coal mine, light textile, food processing and military industry and other industrial sectors may gather explosive gas, steam, dust or fiber and other explosive dangerous places.
ATEX certification
ATEX (it is named after the French "ATmospheresEXplosibles") refers to the Directive "Equipment and Protection Systems for Potential explosive Environments" (94/9/EC) adopted by the European Commission on 23 March 1994. The directive covers both mine and non-mine equipment and, unlike previous directives, covers both mechanical and electrical equipment, extending the potentially explosive environment to include airborne dust and combustible gases, flammable vapors and mist. This instruction is a "new method" instruction commonly referred to as ATEX 100A, the current ATEX explosion-proof instruction. It sets out the technical requirements to be applied to equipment intended for use in potentially explosive environments - basic health and safety requirements and conformity assessment procedures that must be applied before equipment is placed on the European market within its scope of use
Key differences between ATEX certification and IECEx certification:
1. Although both ATEX and IECEx certifications describe the necessary requirements for equipment used in potentially hazardous and hazardous locations, they differ in some respects, the main difference being that ATEX certification is driven by law and IECEx certification by standards.
2. ATEX certification is only valid in the European Union, while IECEx certification is accepted worldwide. Similarly, ATEX certification is required for all non-electrical and electrical equipment legally intended for use in hazardous sites. However, IECEx certification is required only for electrical equipment in hazardous locations.
3. In terms of standards, ATEX certification is not mandatory, but in the case of IECEx certification, a third party certification body is responsible for bringing together all aspects of manufacturing and design for public certification. In short, IECEx certification is more rigorous than ATEX certification in the handling of evidence in the certification process.
4. Another fundamental difference is the way each guide is set up. The IECEx certification system is actually one of the four conformity assessment systems operated by IEC. The IECEx certification system consists of four independent international certification parts, including the IECEx certified equipment Scheme, the IECEx certified Service Scheme, the IECEx Certified Conformity Mark Licensing System and the IECEx Certified Qualified Personnel Scheme. However, ATEX authentication refers to two separate but related directives, as described above.

Quality system for high risk explosion-proof products
ATEX certification and IECEx certification have quality assurance systems. For explosion-proof products of the high risk category, a complete quality system certification must be carried out by the certification body based on ISO 9001 and additional requirements for the design, manufacture and testing of explosion-proof products.
